4/21 update

Phoenix,

The Davis invitational was a fantastic day of competition. There were tons of personal or seasonal bests on the day. Not everyone who competed Saturday had their personal best, but so many of you did.

If you haven't yet, go look at our team instagram, Ashley is doing a great job of highlighting our team, and she is kind enough to spend all this time doing this as a volunteer, just so we can spotlight more of you. It's amazing.

There were so many great races though for real, it was a vibe. I was particularly looking forward to our girls sprint relays of 4x100 and 4x200, because they had been on the cusp of qualifying for state, so we worked a few things with the hopes that we could make it happen, and they absolutely crushed it. They finished 3rd in the 4x100 and 2nd in the 4x200, qualifying both teams for state, and putting the word out there, that we back up. They're now less than half a second from being the first team in school history to go under 50s in the race, and with a couple tweaks in the handoffs I'm feeling more confident than ever that they can do it. They are also bearing down on the school record in both events. The highlight for me was probably seeing how hyped they were after those races. Love to see it.

Side note: I also REALLY loved how many of you came to support for a while even if you weren't competing. Love it. That's what makes great teams, that kind of support and encouragement for each other.

The boys sprint relays were also show. They obliterated the school record in the 4x200 just a week ago at our meet. This week, we had an exchange mishap, which can happen, so we just keep practicing and refining it so we can get it even better next time. And seriously, that team is lethal. When you have Ethan running 3rd, it's like, make sure you got space around you so you don't run into anyone when you see him blast by the opposing 3rd runners, surging to the front. (I always tell whoever is standing around me during that race that our 3rd runner is so fire). Then handing it to Bode? Goodnight.

Anyway, the mishap. Kai couldn't quite reach Tanner's hand, it happens, better know now what to fix than later. In many ways it's good to find errors now so that we can fix it before region and state - and they already qualified for state. As a result, Kai took a huge fall, and scraped himself something fierce. By the time I got to him he was up and walking and insisting "yeah I'm good." He stepped right back into the 4x100, open wounds and all, and delivered - Kai and Tanner were sharp in the exchange of the 4x1 and they broke their own school record, set a week ago, with another sub 43s performance. They exhibited Mr. Ted Lasso's excellent advice of "be[ing] a goldfish." That team first mentality is what we want everywhere on our team.

On the distance side, Alexis had a huge breakthrough in the 1600 and 3200. She had that look in her eye where you kind of just don't say much when she runs by because you don't want to take her out of what she's doing, because she is doing it so well, so it's always like the same thing, "nice work, stay on it, keep it rolling." Super inspiring stuff.

Before the meet she was unsure about being able to run both events in less than two hours, but she and Skye, along with Tyler, all gave it a go and did fantastic. Skye is to the point where she can get 2nd and 3rd in the invited 3200/1600 and be disappointed. She's setting up for an amazing finish to the year, mark my words.

I had so much fun during the open mile, when over 10% of the racers were ours, in a meet with 46 teams. It was amazing to watch you all throw down, with tons of personal bests.

In the field, our lone 9th grader, Addisyn (who also anchors our 4x1 and opens the 4x2) podiumed in the Long Jump, along with Saige, Cyrus and Nathan in the Vault, Disc and Jav. Bouncing around at field events, doing multiple things requires a lot of mental strength, and our field athletes did a great job.

This week

This week is going to be so nice. We will be going to Davis on Wednesday for a dual meet, and then Friday to Woods Cross for an invitational. (Pole Vaulters will compete at Davis on Monday, rather than wx on Friday (because they don't have pits)).

We will not be bussing to Davis, but we might be bussing Friday. TBD. I will let you know.

Everyone can compete at Davis on Wednesday, unless we are saving your legs for Friday.

The meet at Woods Cross is an invitational, so we are only allowed 45 entries, and event minimum standards, and therefore not everyone will be competing, but we will be sure to use all the entries that we can. It will begin at 3:15 PM.

The meet at Davis begins at 3 PM. Talk to your event coaches about which events you'll be doing, and be sure to check meettrax as well. If you cannot go to one or the other be sure to communicate that with your coaches.

Team Dinner Thursday

We may be having a team dinner on Thursday night, I will send out more information on this as it becomes available.

As always, if you have any questions, please let me know.

4/14 update

Phoenix,

There were some great performances over this past week, both at Fremont and at our invitational. SO many PRs, some really outstanding sprint relay times, and a lot of solid learning experiences. These experiences will help you as athletes learn how to perform better, and it helps us coaches know what we need to adjust so that we can get the best out of you.

I've said this before, but I speak for each of our coaches when I say that we will do everything we can to help you be at your best, and our goal is to have you ready for region and state. We trust that you will do everything you can as well, and with that combination, I hope that you trust that good things will happen.

If you haven't already, go checkout our team instagram. Shoutout to Ashley Yates who is managing the account, and doing an incredible job highlighting the team and the meets.

For those of you who went to the Prom. I hope you had a great experience.

This week

We have another busy week so please read this carefully.

Monday

On Monday we are hosting a JH meet with 6 schools. That meet will begin at 1 PM, but set up will begin promptly at lunch time. Most of the set up will be fairly quick, since we left the hurdles out and we don't need anything extravagant.

That said, this meet will be worth 5 points of extra credit to those who come out at lunch (scanning in at 12:30) and stay through the duration. Those who don't need extra credit, because you stayed for all of the Phoenix Invite (THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!) you can go to your 4th period class then come out after school. We'll have you check in somehow as well.

The rest of the meet is not extra credit. From 2:30-end will be out of 5 points, as usual.

The meet is currently scheduled to end at 6:30, but I'm hoping we can make that earlier. Here's hoping we are efficient.

I will post a job list tomorrow. We don't need to worry about gates, so it's mostly field events, concessions, and hurdles. You non field athletes, you will likely be helping at a field event.

It might be rainy, so dress accordingly - note: wind breakers aren't water proof haha.

Wednesday

On Wednesday we are hosting yet again against Syracuse. That meet will begin at 3 PM. Everyone can compete at this meet. Those competing on Saturday either won't compete, or will be limited in some way.

This is a regular meet hosting assignment available on canvas.

Saturday

On Saturday we will be going to the Davis Invitational. There will not be a bus. You can view the meet information on meettrax here. It has the explanation and the schedule on that meet.

Let me give a brief explanation of the Davis invite and who gets in.

The Davis invite is essentially two meets - the AM meet is called the open, the PM is called the invited /seeded section. The open has several heats of everything. The invited is one heat of everything. The way they set up the meet is anyone can register with times they got this year, and then they scratch everyone who is below a certain number. For example: say that 100 people sign up for the mile, but they only want 84 kids. They will take the fastest 84 kids and scratch the others. The fastest 12 or so of those kids will be in the invited section in the afternoon.) They also post a short list of alternates in case someone drops out last second, then they will fill in the gaps. There is no moving from the PM section to the AM section. If you are fast enough to make the PM session, they won't switch you.

Because of this method, we won't know officially who makes it into the meet until Thursday at noon, when entries close, but you can see where you rank on meettrax once you've been registered, and you'll kind of have an idea.

Wrap up

That ought to do it for this week. If you have any questions please let me know. Looking forward to a great week!

4/7 update

Phoenix,

I hope you all had a fantastic spring break. It's always a little tough to get back into the swing of things after an extended break, so hang in there. I for one am really excited to be back at practice with all of you.

We are entering the busiest 10 day stretch of the season. We will be hosting 3 meets in the span of 4 school days. It isn't ideal, and I didn't choose this set up, rather the region and district just kind of piled on, but, in the words of Tommy (#teamtommy) "We're cracked at hosting" so hopefully we can live up to that reputation.

You know how I like to quote my old man, and he is fond of saying "many hands make light work." Because we have so much on our plate in the next days, we're counting on everyone to help and make it bearable for each other. Your duties include giving your best effort in the races, helping the meets run well, and also being there to make it more enjoyable for your friends and teammates.

Wednesday 4/10

Meet at Fremont High School. The buses departure time is 1:45 PM. Those not in the 8th period class should leave class at 1:30 PM.

Those racing at the Phoenix invite on Friday will likely not be competing at Fremont. We'll get those entries out to you today or tomorrow.

Friday 4/12

This is our biggest invitational that we host this year. As mentioned repeatedly, all are expected to help from start to finish, both those competing at those not competing. Everyone will have a job assignment. We are going to have like 18 teams in attendance. It will be a high quality meet, with some stiff standards and limited entries, so we won't be able to get everyone in who meet the standards.

This meet will be worth 10 points on your grade.

Monday 4/15

The district assigned us to host a junior high meet this day. The meet actually begins at 1 PM, which is great for the rest of the day, but not great for your 4th period class.

Everyone will have an assignment from beginning until the end, and set up will need to begin during lunch. I'm going to share more details about this at practice today (Monday 4/8) - as I hope to be able to provide lunch (little Caesars?). This also might be a opportunity for 5 points of extra credit to those who need it, by coming out during 4th period to help with the meet, but I need to get that approved first.

I anticipate this meet ending around 6, maybe earlier if we are efficient.

Wednesday 4/17

We will be hosting a meet with Syracuse. Same thing applies as above. The Davis Invitational is on 4/20, which only accepts a certain number of athletes, so most of you will be competing at this home meet.

Saturday 4/20

We will be going to the Davis Invitational. More information will be sent out about this by next week.

If you have any questions please let me know.

3/31 update - Spring Break Edition

Phoenix,

Outstanding job at the district championships. We had a few more state qualifying marks and tons of PRs in spite of some interesting weather patterns. That meet serves as a great opportunity for us to launch into the second half of our season.

Friday was also one of my favorite practices of the year, the group we had there worked hard and had a great attitude. It's things like that that will help our team reach our goals in the short and long term.

Our coaching staff has talked on numerous occasions about how well we feel this year is going. We're in a good rhythm as a team and we have so many kids working hard to improve. Thank you so much for your contribution to that. I look forward to coming to "work" each day and you all are a big part of that.

Spring Break

I hope you all have a great spring break ahead. For those of you who are in town, we will hold practices on Monday/Wednesday/Friday at 10 AM at the track. I know many of you are headed out of town, but if you're around for any of the days we encourage you to join us. We'll have workouts for each event group.

Your coaches will be putting workout suggestions for those of you who are away so you can do your best to maintain and increase your fitness where possible while away.

More than anything, we hope you return mentally and physically refreshed, sharp, and improved, rather than flat and worn down.

After Spring Break

The days following spring break are quite busy. We will be traveling to Fremont for a meet on Wednesday 4/10 then we will be hosting our biggest invitational of the year, The Phoenix Invitational on Friday 4/12. Those who are competing on Friday will likely not be competing on Wednesday, save for a few exceptions. Everyone will be expected to help and compete at our meet on Friday 4/12. I expect the meet to end around 9 PM.

It is an impressive invitational with some of the best schools in the state coming to compete, and it is a ton of fun for all involved, albeit with a lot of work involved.

This meet has been on our schedule since the turn of the semester (actually before then, but many likely hadn't looked until 2nd semester). Make your plans for your activities and other commitments accordingly. Maybe you need to do the old school method of "day dates" for prom being the same day as the dance. If that is just unbearably cringe or whatever the word is today, just choose another day of the week.

Parent volunteers

Parents, we are still short a few volunteer slots for some of our year events. Please check out this sign up if you would be willing to help with items at meets or the end of year banquet. FHS track and Field: Track and field support (signupgenius.com)

3/24 update

Phoenix,

I can't thank each of you athletes enough for your help during the Super Meet this week. We hosted over 1000 participants from 18 schools in over 2300 entries. I hope you take pride in knowing that you put on a great meet that over 1000 kids were able to benefit from. There were tons of PRs from not just our team, but the others as well. So again, thank you for helping so many people have a positive experience.

As for our performances, we had several more all-time performances which can be viewed at the tabs above. I spent like an hour typing up the updated performance list because there were so many personal bests, and I'll happily do that each week if need be.

Go take a minute to check out the updated performance lists and see where the new all time marks are on our current team.

As we enter the final week before spring break, let's keep the habits of consistency going before the break.

This week

This week we are headed to Syracuse High for the Davis District Championships on Tuesday and Wednesday. Each of the Davis County schools will be there, and it is historically a really good and fun meet.

We are very limited on entries for this meet. We are allowed 4 people per event, which means only about one third or half of our entire team will get into the meet. We also have 8 entries per gender in an unseeded 100m and 1600m. Unseeded simply means those two events won't be scored in the final results, but they will still be timed accurately. We will get as many in as we can.

That said, I encourage everyone to come to the meet both days to support the squad. I have two buses going there and back, and I'd like to fill them up!

The bus will depart at 1:30 on both days. You'll be excused on Wednesday for all of 4th period (Tuesday is the aspire/act testing day so no excusal necessary).

Kids are allowed to drive home with their parents from the meet.

Practices on Monday/Thursday/Friday will be as usual.

Spring Break

I know we are all gearing up for a welcome spring break. Whenever possible, get a workout in each day, the more specific to your event, the better.

We will hold optional practices a couple of days during the break for anyone who is around. Those days will be determined in the coming days.

Parent Volunteers

We still have many openings for volunteers for our meets and end of year banquet. Please view the sign up genius here.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

3/17 update

Phoenix,

I've been very happy with our first two weeks of practices, and with our first meet that we've hosted. Although we haven't been perfect, I really enjoy the group that we have, and we are becoming a fairly well rounded team.

We have a good chunk of our team who is very consistent in their attendance and effort, so for the most part we are doing a great job. Another portion of the team could level up in their consistency, being sure to be there on A and B days, so that we're better able to improve.

We are better when we are all together. Each time someone comes to practice, the rest of the group benefits. Work your schedule around so that you are there each day. If we can improve our level of consistency then our team will be that much better. Again, so many of you are doing a great job at that, and I appreciate your example and approach. We're better for it.

Register my athlete

If you aren't done. Get it done. Thanks to those who have it complete - it makes everything go much smoother for you and for us.

This week (3/18-22)

We have a complicated week ahead. We will be hosting the Super Meet on Wednesday and Thursday. The girls will be competing on Wednesday and the boys will be working the meet. On Thursday the groups will switch roles. Here's hoping for good weather.

This is a State Qualifying Meet, sometimes called "invitational." That means that if you run/throw/jump a legal state qualifying mark then you punch your ticket to the state meet. Those standards can be seen on the side of this website. Because it is a larger meet not everyone will be able to entered into all of their events. This particular meet allows most people to be entered, but many other invitationals are much more limited.

As of now it looks like we may have a good couple of days to set new PRs and generally have a great meet. We will work Monday and Tuesday to help you have your best opportunity to compete this week. The week after this we head to Syracuse to compete at the Davis District Championships, and we're limited in the number of people we can put in events, so this meet will help us in our decision making.

We intend to enter everyone who is eligible into at least one event at the Super Meet. Some will be entered in more that one, depending on where you currently are on the depth chart. The depth chart, also known as the performance list, can be viewed at the top of this page.

We will need everyone's help both days at the meet. Both the boys and girls are expected to stay for the entire meet on both days, then scan out when we are all finished up. Thanks to your help at the meet this week, we were able to finish at a decent hour. The meet will go later this week (we have like 19 schools coming), so we need to be efficient hosts so that everything goes smoothly.

We have more jobs, like concessions and gates, than we had last week. People working hurdle crew/relay officials will be on a rotation with gates and concessions, so no one is working those jobs the entire time. I hope to get those jobs out on Tuesday morning.

You can view the meet info, and the entries when we are done, on Meettrax. It's easiest to use if you have the app, by the way.

Next week (3/25-29)

Can you believe we're nearly to spring break? Next week we head to the District championships on Tuesday/Wednesday. That meet is set up in trials/finals. Those qualifying for finals compete Wednesday, in addition to a few field, relay, and distance events. While we are limited in how many people we can enter, we want to bring the whole team on the buses to come support the team.

Parent volunteers

If you're interested in volunteering in any way this season, please view the "parent sign up genius" at the top of this page. We appreciate all your support!

3/10 update

Phoenix,

We had an exceptional time down in St. George this past week, with about 40 kids competing. Tons of PRs, 1 overall champion - Bode Jensen in the 400 with a 49.08; a new school record - Skye in the 800 with a 2:17.63, second overall, and like 8 seconds faster than 3 weeks ago at Simplot when she worried she'd never speed up (lol); our lone freshman on the Team, Addisyn, broke the top 10 all-time list in the 100m in just her first meet in high school, which by the way, was in to a -1.3 m/s head wind; a few state qualifiers; at least one Arcadia qualifier; several BYU qualifiers; one spot-it champion - Savannah Barlow;  etc.

We brought a great group of kids on the trip which made it very easy for me. I am grateful to you parents for raising and sending such great people. Planning a trip like this takes many hours of preparation - the last two months have been a whirlwind trying to get the trip planned in addition to things like Simplot and the start of our season. Although we are hosting several meets in the near future, it will still be less busy that the last month, and I look forward to having increased capacity to help our athletes improve and have a positive season.

I am greatly looking forward to the rest of March. We have a lot of good things ahead and a strong team. Let us make the most of each day.

Register my athlete (still??)

Yes, still.

Make sure it is completed. Many of you are seeing a "pending" on the approval of things you've uploaded. That will be done once our AD has a chance to get to them. He's been quite busy as well.

You cannot compete from here forward unless it is done.

With 3rd term now over, those with "U"s in citizenship will need to have those cleared before you can compete. Anyone below a 2.0 gpa or more than one "F" will be deemed ineligible unless the eligibility committee overturns it. Talk to Ms. Zachman if you think that applies to you.

Practice Monday, Tuesday 3/11, 12

We will be practicing both days at noon. Do what you can with your schedule to be there. Especially with the meet coming up, you'll want to be sharp.

Meet on 3/13 at home

We will be hosting Weber on Wednesday. When we host meets, everyone is expected to help from the beginning until the very end. In the case of this meet, it won't go super late. That said, we will scan in to start practice and then scan out at the conclusion of the meet. You need not ask me when that will be, because we will gather everyone around once clean up is finished so I can talk to you for 17 seconds, and then we will scan out and dismiss.

I will post those assignments tomorrow, most likely.

Talk to your event coaches about which events you should do, if any. (Snow Canyon distance runners are unlikely to race this weekend, sprinters/throwers/jumpers may be a different story).

Team Store

The team store closes tomorrow. Please check it out asap. My Team Shop (bsnteamsports.com)

Uniforms

If you haven't received a uniform yet, we will be handing them out to those who have paid the fees and completed registration on Wednesday before the meet.

Performance List

I also hope to have a performance list for you by the end of tomorrow as well, which is a running list of everyone's PR in each event they have done. That will be found at the top of the page when ready.

If you have any questions for me, please let me know.

3/3 Update

Phoenix,

Our first week of the outdoor season is now behind us. It was great to have so many new people join us this week, and have some regularity with our practices. We're looking forward to getting into a rhythm with training and really taking some great strides with our team (pun intended).

We only have 10 weeks until state, 9 until region, 8 to BYU, 6 to Davis, 5 until the Phoenix Invite, etc. In other words, time is short so we need to use it wisely and to the best of our abilities.

Our first meet is upon us, the Snow Canyon Invitational. By now you know if you're going. Information for that meet can be found here. Concerning Snow Canyon and the rest of the outdoor season: Several of you have "U"s from 2nd term or any term in your 9th-12th grade year, and you won't be able to compete unless those are cleared prior to competition. If you're reading this, please go check to see how many you have.

Meeting Recap

One of the focuses of the meet was helping our athletes be committed to the team, and being a part of something bigger than themselves. The best way to get that started is to help/encourage your kids to be at each practice and to be a great teammate.

Furthermore, helping them eat enough and get the right amount of sleep. Both easier said than done, but with consistent reminders, help, and encouragement, hopefully our athletes move in the right direction where possible.

Announcements for the season will be made through GroupMe. There are groups for each events, and another for the parents. You can find those here: GroupMe Links

We are going to need an abundance of help this season, with meets, snacks, and the end of year banquet, among other things. If you'd like to help with anything, please view this sign up genius

Lastly, the expenses for track and field are seemingly unending. Amongst those bills are needed upgrades in our hurdles, additional poles for vault, more shots for our shot putters (this is probably our most urgent need), and other items needed to compete events.

The Lion's share of our funding comes from hosting meets, but another opportunity that we're working on is event sponsorships. If you'd like to sponsor an event, your name/business can be promoted along with an event at our 3 days of invitationals that we will be hosting. To donate, see more information, please go to our DSD Gives website here: 2024 FHS Track and Field Sponsorship - DSD Give

This week

All practices are now mandatory. Missing practices may result in not being entered to compete at the following meets. Those of you in the class, be sure to come on A days. Those of you not in the class, be sure to come after school every day so we can continue to improve each day.

We are going to begin working sprint relay handoffs with earnest, and those need to be done just about everyday.

About a third of our team will be gone on Friday 3/8, but we will still be holding practice after school with the coaches who are here.

Next week (3/11-15)

The week after next is a bit odd, we have Monday/Tuesday (3/11,12) off of school, and we've been asked to practice at high Noon (12 PM) both days, so that soccer can hold a kids camp on the field around 2 PM each day.

We will then be hosting our first of six days of track meets that we have here during 4th term, on Wednesday 3/13.

Everyone is required to be at the meet (and each of the meets we host) from beginning until the end. Fortunately, this time it is a B-day, so 8th period class members will come out at 1:35 as usual, and we will begin the set up. Those not in the class will come out after school.

Each person will have an assigned job for the meet, which will be posted on canvas and on here. Between the events that you are doing you will be tasked with helping the meet go smoothly, whether helping at a field event, at the finish line, moving blocks, moving hurdles, etc. Please be ready to do your job so that we can move the meet along, everyone having a good day to race, and be done in a timely manner.

Team Store

If you are interested in ordering any gear for the track season, you can order from the BSN team store. There are a number of different items. This is optional. The store will close in the next few days.

Fit for Life Credit through 8th Period

If you would like to get Fit for Life credit through the track class, you can pay $25 in the office for fit for life, and then bring your receipt to Coach Walkenhurst. There are a few hoops you'll need to jump through, but it's fairly simple.

Unassorted Thoughts

Here's a few random thoughts I wanted to get out there.

We currently have a metal awards stand for top 3 finishers. It's rather small and unremarkable. If someone had the means, knowhow, and interest in making a better one (with 6-8 places), I'm sure the athletes would appreciate something a little better when being recognized for their accomplishments, and we'd be able to recognize more people in each event.

Parents and athletes should down load the app Meettrax. Many of the meets that we attend, and all that we host, will be using this platform. On the app you can find heat/flight/lane assignments, in addition to other items like the schedule, estimated time starts, etc. Athletes should claim their profile which has already been made in our team.

As a reminder, registration is coming due very soon on Register my athlete. For help, you can go here.

3rd term is coming to a close. If you have more than 1 F, a GPA less than 2.0, or multiple Us, you will not be eligible to compete during 4th term. Make sure your grades are where you need them to be. (Citizenship can be made up and you can become eligible, but GPA/grades typically cannot.)

As always, if you have any questions please let me know.

2/18 Update

Phoenix,

A great group of kids/athletes went up to Simplot this past weekend to compete. That meet is always a lot of fun. We had 30 or so kids compete over the 3 days, with 4 individuals in finals: Sahara, 60H; Skye, 1600m; Bode, 400m; Izaac, 800m. We also had two medley relay teams make it, with the boys finishing 4th overall.

That meet is a great opportunity to race on a fast track, spend time with teammates, see some of the countries best athletes, run in relays with sprinters and distance runners together (medley), and get yourself geared up for the start of the outdoor season.

Next year our team goal is to have 50 or more kids compete at Simplot, with at least 12 relay teams (4x200, Medley, 4x400, and 4x800), and get twice as many people and teams to finals. To make that happen I will book hotel rooms well in advance to get the best rate possible, and we will need parents who are willing to join us on the trip to drive kids up, back, and to help shuttle kids to the arena in the morning/evening, and to get meals, etc. The vast majority of the time will be spent at the arena.

Upcoming

This week we will be practicing together on Tuesday-Thursday. Next week we will officially begin our outdoor season on Monday, at which point all of our practices will be mandatory, and we will meet Monday-Friday with rare exception.

During the meeting we will introduce our staff and talk about expectations, volunteers, registration, and the season schedule. I hope to be no more than 30 minutes - with some time for questions for event coaches.

Parent Meeting

We are going to be holding a parent meeting on Monday 2/26 at 6 PM in the little theater at FHS. You can get there easiest by parking in the west lot, going in the doors by the main gym, and taking your first right towards the main office - the little theater is that first room in that hallway, immediately across from the elevator, you can see the room from the main gym doors.

Registration

2/11 Update

Phoenix,

Another week closer to the official start of the outdoor season, which will be on 2/26. A few things to know prior to that are below.

Registration

Everyone needs to complete registration at Register My Athlete. This will include a few minutes of preparation and a physical. The physical is the most time consuming part, and it is important that you take the form from the website to the Dr. and that you upload the ENTIRE FORM (all 3 pages) to the website once it's been filled out. Where people go wrong is not uploading the entire 3 pages.

If you've never done registration on that site before please view a walk through I've put together here: Registration instructions

Simplot

A group of athletes are headed up to Simplot this weekend, and we have a few opportunities for kids and relay teams to make finals. Anyone who is in a relay is expected to work handoffs everyday this week.

One of the tricky parts of Simplot is that the track is made out of wood and they don't allow spikes on the first two days of the meet. In finals on Saturday you can wear spikes (they have pin spikes available for purchase there).

So, on Thursday and Friday, if you have spikes that are plastic on the bottom, they won't be functional. Therefore your options are either wear your regular running shoes (not ideal) or wear cross country flats that have rubber tread along the entire shoe.

If any of you cross country kids have flats that could be borrowed by a teammate, please let us know. If you have older siblings who have flats that are no longer used, raid their closets are borrow them too.

This week

This week we'll be practicing after school on Monday and Wednesday. Let us maximize each opportunity that we have to get better.

If you have any questions please let me know.

2/4 update

Phoenix,

It's starting to feel like spring outside (and just as I say that it'll probably start to snow on us), so we've had some really good days outside on the track this past week. While our B-day practices have been solid, we need more people to start coming on A days after school so we can improve our entire team. This week I encourage you to come on Tuesday/Thursday (A days) after school to get some work in.

This week

Phoenix Preview (when incoming sophomores come in to check out the programs) is on Tuesday from 4:30-6:30. We could use a group of you to come hang out at the track/xc table to advertise for us. I'll be at the psychology spot, but the kids would rather talk to you than me anyway tbh.

We will be practicing after school on Tuesday/Thursday as mentioned above.

There is another indoor meet at the olympic oval on Friday night. The meet information is on Meettrax and can be found here.

Simplot Games

Simplot is rapidly approaching, and I have dropped the majority of the rooms. We have 5 remaining, and I'm going to drop those on Tuesday unless those wanting to stay in the hotel have a plan for transportation up to Pocatello and to and from the arena. If any parents want the rooms, let me know. It's the Best Western in Pocatello. Feel free to call around up there to find rooms on your own if you'd like.

That said, we need to start getting everyone registered for Simplot, so I have yet another form for you to fill out to let me know which individual event you'd like to compete in. You only get one individual event.

If you'd like to be considered for a relay on Friday, indicate it on the form above. We have a few teams that can make finals.

The above form needs to be filled out this weekend. I will be done registering athletes on Friday 2/9 at 9 AM.

Snow Canyon

We await final confirmation on Snow Canyon, but it looks like it's happening. We're going to be able to take almost everyone who said they would for sure go on the bus and stay in hotels (you know who you are at this point, based on personal conversations you've had with me). I'm hoping to find a way to each of you in. Stay tuned for further information.

Outdoor Schedule

You can find our outdoor schedule at the top of this page, or at the link below.

Looking forward to another great week. Let me know if you have any questions.

1/28 update

Phoenix,

I'm sorry I'm getting this out a day late. We had another great week last week, and it's clear that our collective fitness is improving. I've had fun working with the hurdlers a few times in the past week or so, and we will continue to work hurdles on occasion during the winter. I also recommend doing any hurdle drills you can on your own, before or after practice.

As with any task that requires improving technique, watching video of people doing it well is a great strategy to help you improve your own skills. Video, paired with visualization, makes a huge difference. If you're thinking, 'I don't even know what video to watch,' I'll give a few recommendations below of current US greats.

For hurdles: Keni Harrison. Discus: Valarie Allman. Shot put: Ryan Crouser. Sprints: Sha'carri Richardson and Noah Lyles. Distance: Courtney Wayment, Emily Sisson. Clayton Young, and Conner Mantz (the last 3 are hoping to book a spot on Saturday for the 2024 Paris Olympics in the Marathon).

You vaulters and jumpers will need to ask Coach Halls and Farrell what video to watch, because those ones are unique enough at different levels of ability that you may benefit from watching amateurs in addition to professionals.

Snow Canyon Invitational

We are getting very close, and I think the trip is going to happen. We still could use a few more affirmative votes on the survey, so if you got it and you haven't yet, please go select yes. We are now trying to jump through the final few hoops. I will likely have one room available for a chaperone, if a parent or two would like to join us. If you are interested in that, please let me know.

This week

This week we will be practicing after school on Monday/Wednesday, and in class on Tuesday/Thursday. The weather looks to be quite warm, so we plan to be outside after checking in. Please plan accordingly. I recommend bringing spikes to practice every day.

(Side note, If you aren't sure what spikes are, they are racing and jumping shoes designed for the track. There are also specific spikes designed for different events, sprints, distance, jumps. Sometimes those who are new to the sport think they aren't important, but they make a huge difference, so I really recommend getting some. They can be found at the Nike store, Salt Lake Running Co., online, etc.)

There is a meet this weekend at he Olympic Ice Oval in Kearns: 5662 South 4800 West Cougar Lane
I've included the meet information with registration info and the approximate schedule below. Please note that you will be registering as individuals, not as a team.

If any of you would like to run a relay, please let me know and I can register relay teams, and the team will cover the cost of those relays. I would LOVE to have a bunch of 4x400s at the end of the day on Saturday.

We encourage all of you to go compete and get a starting point for where you are right now. Especially if you want to go to Simplot or to Snow Canyon, this will help you decide on which individual event you want to do (Simplot) and if you'll be able to go (Snow Canyon).

Talk to your event coach about a plan for competing.

Simplot

If you would like to go to Simplot, but you haven't yet told me if you'd like a hotel, or which events, please fill out this form. I'm going to drop excess rooms on Wednesday morning. We still have plenty of space remaining.

Currently we have 23 kids who want to stay at the hotel, which is great, but my biggest problem at the moment is transportation. Kids will need transportation to get up there and home, and then to and from the hotel to the arena (we won't be going back and forth, just once each day). If we don't have enough transportation I'm going to have to drop all the rooms.

If any of you parents want to bring your child up, or your family, and you want one of the rooms I'm holding, please let me know. Rooms are growing more and more scarce.

Also keep in mind with Simplot, each person is only allowed 1 individual event.

If you have any questions please let me know.

1/21 update

Phoenix,

I apologize for getting this update out a bit late. With the meet on Friday, in addition to all the hoops through which I am required to jump for the St. George trip, I never got around to it.

I've said this a few times, but we have a really great group of kids this year. It's been a lot of fun working with you all. I have appreciated your energy and willingness to work. That will be invaluable moving forward. Let us find ways to be better in our approach and execution day in and day out.

Snow Canyon (St. George)

Speaking of St. George, those who said they are interested in going will have an email sent to their parents/guardians with a survey about whether the parents approve of the trip. Please check your email and respond to the survey. Without 80% approval we will not be able to go. Non-responses are counted as a no.

At this point the trip is still up in the air, it depends on if we can get the survey completed in time and if we have enough kids who want to go to keep the cost down. Once the survey is finalized we'll have more clarity on the matter.

That said, if any of you said yes on the form that you want to go, but you actually can't, then I need to know asap. If a few people who said yes can no longer go, then we may have to scrap the trip. I need to know your final trip status by Wednesday 1/24.

Simplot

If you would like to go to Simplot, but you haven't yet told me if you'd like a hotel, or which events, please fill out this form.

We're going to need a few parents to drive kids up and/or stay up there for the weekend to help with transportation. If you would be interested in that please let me know. I may be biased, but I think it's a lot of fun.

This week

This week we will be practicing all 5 days, for the first time this year. We're off to a good start, but we have a long ways to go, so be sure to improve your consistency in training, and support your teammates.

We will try to be outside as often as possible, so dress accordingly. The first few days of the week in particular look like they will be very warm.

Weber State Inv.

There is a meet at Weber this weekend, but it isn't one that we necessarily promote. Next week at the Olympic Oval is one we will encourage everyone to attend. If you'd like to go to Weber, here is the meet information. runnercard.com

I know there will likely be pole vaulters going on Friday night with Coach Halls.

Be sure to select "individual sign-up" when registering.

National Girls and Women in Sports Day - Utah Jazz Event

In celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day and in partnership with Toyota, the Utah Jazz is hosting a Her Time Watch Party on Thursday, February 8 at Delta Center. Come cheer with us as the Jazz take on the Phoenix Suns. There will be food, fun and a free gift for everyone who attends.

The event is free but registration is required. This is NOT a school sponsored event. Parents and students will need to find their own way to the Delta Center. The game vs. the Phoenix Suns will be played in Phoenix, and broadcast in the  Delta Center.

1/14 update

Phoenix,

We've had a great start to our second semester. I loved meeting many new faces, it will take some time for the coaches to memorize names, so stay patient with us when we ask you for the 5th time. I've been very impressed with our sprint/jump/vault team, with the consistency so far, with the throwers and how they want to improve, and of course our distance team and their love of running in the snow. If we keep up the consistency and continue to level up, we'll become a very strong team.

Below are a few things to be aware of as we move forward.

There are two forms I'm asking athletes to fill out so that we know who wants to go on a few possible trips that we are going on - one to Pocatello (not school sponsored), and one to St. George (school sponsored). If you cannot go on the trip, please still out the form for us so we know you've been ruled out.

BYU Indoor Meet

This weekend there is an indoor meet at BYU. We aren't promoting this meet as a huge team event, but it is an opportunity to go down and compete. If you are interested, talk to your event coach and see if you should go down, and then registration is done on your own at the following site: BYU Indoor Invitational [High School][2024] - meettrax

For this meet there may be coaches going down on Friday night, but likely not at all on Saturday.

Schedule for 1/15-19

This week there is no school on Monday, and therefore no practice, so talk to your event coaches about potential workouts that you can do on your own or with friends.

We will have class on Tuesday/Thursday and then after school practice on Wednesday only. As a reminder, practices will rarely end right at 2:20. If you have sensitive things you need to attend to after school, we're accommodating to that during the winter season, but do what you can to make sure that you can complete the workouts before leaving. They will rarely go much beyond 2:45.

The Simplot Games

Please view the information at the link herein, some of which is time sensitive - including a form to share your interest level, for the Simplot Games: https://farmingtontrack.blogspot.com/p/simplot-2024-overview.html

Snow Canyon Invitational - St. George, 3/8-9

We are hoping to take some of the team to St. George in early March.

We will leave early in the morning on Friday 3/8, and return late Saturday night. The official cost is still TBD, but will be around $300 per person. This would be a school approved trip so absences will be excused.

Please be aware that we will NOT be able to take the entire team on this trip. Due to limitations for entries in the meet, we wouldn't be able to reasonably fill two buses, so we are limited to 1 bus, a maximum of 51 athletes. For the trip to be worth the cost, we will try to get most people in multiple events, but that is not guaranteed either.

We will have to make decisions on who can go compete. We are only allowed 6 entries per event, which means some of our athletes won't make the cut. That will be decided based on times from last year, xc, and done during indoor this year. Attendance at practices will also be given equal weight. Those who attend with consistency and with marks respectively closer to state qualifying standards will be given priority.

Please note that this is time sensitive, so please fill this out by Monday night, 1/15.

Below, please let me know your interest level after considering the cost.
