4/2 Update - Winter Break: the sequel

Phoenix,

Winter Spring break is upon us, although for those staying in Davis County it's beginning to look a lot like Winter break 2.0. Regardless, I hope it is a good break for each of you and that you come back mentally refreshed for the final push.

If you are heading out of town for the break, enjoy it! Whenever possible we of course recommend you get a workout in. Your coaches will put together some suggested workouts and they will be posted  in your respective groupme.

If you are sticking around, I'll try to get a group together for practices at least twice, but the weather doesn't look super cooperative at the beginning of the week. We are tentatively planning for Tuesday/Thursday around 10, but check your groupme for any changes - Wednesday/Friday might be better.

Uniform Fees

You should see a new fee on your account (in addition to the $20 transportation, $35 school, $35 district, and $5 drug testing) for your uniforms. The uniform top is $55 and the bottom is $18 or $20. These uniforms will be yours to use over the years.

After the break

On Wednesday 4/12 we are going to be playing host to Layton and Weber in a region tri-meet. Those not racing at the Phoenix invite are going to be asked to help run events and work the meet. The job assignments for that meet will be posted early next week (I have them 90% finished). That meet shouldn't go that long as Weber has a meet that Monday/Tuesday for part of their squad, and all 3 team are racing on Friday at our invite. We will need everyone's help with things like hurdles, because we just don't have enough kids not competing that day to make it go quickly without everyone stepping up to help.

Which brings me to Friday 4/14. We will be hosting our invitational, which will be our biggest fundraiser of the year. Those of you who aren't competing that day will be expected to help. That meet will go fairly long, similar to the super meet, so plan accordingly with food, beverage, and attire. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we can work together in putting on one of the best meets of the year. There are something like 20 schools coming (with limited entries so it doesn't go all night), so we will have our hands full. Please be at your job position ready to be called upon in a moment's notice.

Again, I hope you have a great spring break. I'll check my email on occasion if you need anything. I'll miss you all and look forward to re-uniting on 4/10, rain, snow, or shine.

3/26 update

Phoenix,

Remote Day Update

Because of the remote learning day there are going to be many questions.

1. There is still hope for the meet tomorrow, it is supposed to warm up tomorrow, we just need it to do so quickly and powerfully.

2. Entries for the meet will be shared in the groupme as soon as they are ready. You can look on runnercard for preliminary entries, but they won't be finalized for a while. Please remember that we are limited in entries so only a relative small number will be able to compete tomorrow. However, everyone is allowed to come on the bus. If you aren't racing you do not need to wear your uniform.

The buses will leave at 1:30, so you will be excused at 1:15 from 4th period to attend the meet.

3. Please check your respective groupmes for potential forms to be filled out to indicate your interest in events.

4. Those of you in the class, you have an announcement in canvas clarifying what we are doing during class time, which obviously is nothing formal. Coach Halls gave a solid recommendation of going out and shoveling your elderly neighbors' walks and driveways as a solid workout. Distance runners racing tomorrow should consider an easy treadmill session.

5. The team dinner tonight is being rescheduled, the date on that is still to be determined, it may be Thursday or after spring break. Stay tuned.

Super Meet

Thank you to all the kids, parents, faculty, and coaches for your help making Thursday a very good meet. I have received many comments and messages complimenting us on that meet, and it could not have been done without all of your help. I remember thinking yesterday that this was the first meet where I felt like everything was covered so I could move around and help make sure it all went smoothly rather than troubleshooting a million things. It went extremely well aside from a few internet issues that set us back about 10 minutes in total.

I know it was a long night, we ended around 8 PM, but honestly that is one of the faster invitationals that I've ever been too.  A meet that size can wind up going to 10 or so, so we did great keeping it going quickly and cleaning up very well. Boys, thanks for being so willing to help the meet go well for your teammates, hats off to you (Sorry Nat).

I recognize the sacrifice each of you had to make to be there, each of my coaches had a job that they did remarkably well that kept them away from their families just as late as each of you, so while I thank you for your sacrifice, please thank them as well for their tireless efforts to give you the best experience possible.

Again, thank you so much. Our program made around $1500 from the meet which will be very beneficial for us.

I'm very sorry, gentlemen, that your meet was cancelled. That's how spring in Utah likes to go at times, but I'm confident we'll get you some good days yet so you can show off your hard work.

Next Week

Next week has a slight change, the District meet was originally scheduled to be a two day meet, but it has been changed to 1 day, which is Tuesday at Syracuse High School. The information for that meet is below. We are limited in entries at this meet so not everyone will be able to compete. Everyone is welcome, and encouraged, so come support, even if you aren't racing, but this won't be a meet that determines your grade. We will have buses to this meet, with the excusal time from class tbd.

The information for that meet can be found here. Meet information as of today.

If you can't go because of region band please let me know.

Super Meet Throws

This has been cancelled. There will be no events held at Davis today.

Team Dinner - rescheduled, day tbd.

We're not sure when we'll be able to hold this dinner. Hopefully soon. Stay tuned.

If you have any questions please let me know.

3/19 update

Phoenix,

As usual, there is a lot of information here, so please read it carefully - each week I have a number of kids ask me questions that are directly addressed here.

Farmington Super meet

This week we will be hosting our first meet of the season, which is an invitational. Because it is a smaller meet, we can enter our entire team, so all are able to compete.

The girls will be competing on Thursday and the boys will be managing the meet and making sure it runs smoothly. On Friday the boys will compete and the girls will work the meet. More on that below.

You can find the order of events/estimated time schedule here.

Because of the condition of the fields/shot put sector, we might be moving the throwing events to Davis. If that is the case those assigned to help in those areas would be moved to a different job, and those competing would need to help in various ways over there to make sure it goes smoothly.

Meet hosting standards

Our goal in hosting meets is to give those competing the best possible experience. I chose to host the Super Meet so that our entire team can have a chance to compete against quality competition early in he season, while learning how to host an efficient meet. Our program will also make some money on the meet which will allow us to purchase equipment (like replacing hurdles or adding poles for the vault) that we otherwise could not afford.

Part of the duties of being on the track team is helping at the meets we are hosting. Everyone who is in the class and who is on the team is expected to help, and to stay the entire time. Not helping/staying for the whole meet may result in you not being entered in the next meet. For those in the class, your grade is largely dependent on helping at the meet (each meet makes up about 10% of the grade). At the conclusion of the meet everyone will scan out.

Each person will be given a job with an assignment. Those jobs will go until everything is done at the meet. Once we are all done together, we will dismiss and go home.

I'm not motivated for the clean up and such to take forever, quite the contrary, I too want to go home and see my family. So let's all work together and get it done as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Boys' assignments for the Super Meet

Girls' assignments for the Super Meet

Volunteers

As discussed previously, we have a page dedicated to ways that you can volunteer to help with meets, team dinners, etc.

For the meets we are hosting we have several things that we can use help with. For our meet on Thursday we could use some help working in the concession stand. We'll have kids there to help, but we really need an adult to be there too, and we don't have enough coaches to be everywhere.

If you are willing to help for a few hours, or even just for part of the meet, feel free to email me, or register on our volunteer sign up genius.

Practice Schedule

Monday Practice - REP Pro Athletes

On Monday we are going to have some professional runners, part of the Run Elite Program, which is a professional running group based in Utah, come and speak to us for about 30 minutes. After that they will join our distance runners for a run.

We will meet a 2:40 in the choir room, arrive on time and ready to run so we can go out and warm up as soon as they are done.

Tuesday and Wednesday will be normal practice days.

On Thursday we will set up for the meet during the track class, beginning at 1:15 as usual. On Friday, because we won't have a class, you will be excused at 1:30 so you can come out and help set up. I will let you know if that time changes.

As always, if you have any questions please let me know.

3/12 update

Phoenix,

I wanted to get this update out to you as early as possible because we have a meet coming up quickly.

Meet Change/Information

The meet on Wednesday at Davis has been moved to Monday, 3/13 @ 3:00, still at Davis.

Because our time trial was cut a bit short, we didn't get to do our 4x400m relays. Therefore, we are going to enter all runners into that event (it'll be fun, don't fret, we'll have a slew of teams running together which will be the highlight of the meet for many of you). Your team will be counting on you being there, so you can't bail. If you're too ill or hurt to do 1 lap on the track, then you shouldn't be competing at all while you rest up and heal.

The event entries for Davis are done at the meet, prior to each event, so you can sign up there for the event rather than needing to declare your interest beforehand. We will assemble 4x400s prior to the meet.

The schedule for the meet will be at the end of this post.

Busing

For the majority of our meets we will have buses, but we weren't able to get one for this meet with the short notice of change, so we will be meeting at Davis at approximately 2:00 - you will need to arrange your own transportation. You will be excused from school at 1:30 PM to get there on time.

Registration

I know you're sick of hearing about it, and I'm tired of talking about it. This needs to be done or you cannot compete on Monday. I know some of you are waiting on your physical documents to be approved online, they will be in the coming days by our AD, and some are waiting on appointments. The state rule that I'm stuck enforcing is that no one can compete without it being complete, so I'll stand by that.

Uniforms

If you have not yet received a uniform, AND you have completed register my athlete, you can come get a uniform on MONDAY AT 1:00 PM (I'll write you a do not mark tardy note, and then have you excused) at 1:30.

TEAM

I've heard it said before in reference to a track team (not necessarily ours) that a team, for example, has 150 kids, but there are about 60 "core" kids who are always there, working hard, and being good teammates. We don't want it to be like that here. If we have 150 kids on the team (and that is about how many we have), then we want 150 kids ready and willing to work day in and day out. If we have that, then we will have a great TEAM and an enjoyable season.

The best way to do that, is to be with the TEAM, and do what the TEAM is doing. That can be warming up together, cooling down together (big one), ab work together, strides together, hurdle drills together, RUNNING A 4X400 TOGETHER, etc. What it isn't is rushing through the workout and leaving early. It isn't doing your own thing or lackadaisically going through the drills without thinking about them or getting to know your teammates, it's not missing practices, or making exceptions for yourself when they are unnecessary.

Parents, however you can, please support and encourage your kids to be a "core" member of our TEAM.

If you have any questions please let me know. See you MONDAY @ Davis High!

Meet Change

Phoenix,

Thank you all for a great time trial! I will be working on results tomorrow, and will send the link in the group me when the time comes. Now on to more pressing matters.

Due to some extenuating circumstances, the meet on 3/15 is being moved to 3/13, still at Davis High School. The only reason it wouldn't change is if some unforeseen issue with admin or transportation arises.

Therefore, please plan on the meet being on Monday.

Many of you do not have uniforms yet, once you complete your registration on register my athlete, you will be issued uniforms. If that is done, we will pass out uniforms tomorrow at practice.

Reminder, you CANNOT compete in the meet if you are not completely done with register my athlete.

Let me know if you have any questions.

3/5 update

Phoenix,

The start of the season is always very busy, and often quite snowy, so we find ourselves in a pretty typical year. I'm hopeful that the snow will generally melt away within a day or so, so I don't think it will set us back much. One year we did a mile time trial that started clear and ended with like an inch of snow during the second heat, it was wild. Hopefully we won't get it that badly during practice.

We have quite a few items to cover, so please review them carefully.

First, and I want to make sure this stands out, our meet on Wednesday has been cancelled. We will practice as usual.

Schedule for the week

Monday - Practice as usual

Tuesday - ACT day, practice at 2:30 on the track

Wednesday - Meet cancelled, practice as usual - uniform distribution for those who have completed RMA.

Thursday - Time Trial, we will meet on the track at 2:40 as if it were practice.

Friday - Practice as usual.

Register my Athlete

As mentioned previously, you need to complete registration before you are allowed to compete. Our first meet is now 3/15 at Davis. If it isn't completely done, you will not be allowed to compete. If you aren't sure how to do that, please visit this page.

One of the things you need to do to complete the registration is get a physical, and you must bring the physical form from register my athlete. That form can be downloaded from register my athlete.

If you don't want to wait to get an appointment with your doctor, the school is offering a physical night tomorrow, 3/7.

"The spring physical night will be March 7th at 6:00 PM at the high school. ALL money goes back in to the training room for supplies and new things. The cost is $25 and they can pay cash, check, or CC."

If you would prefer to go through your own doctor, please make sure you can get an appointment in time to complete the registration before the first meet.

Wrap up

In summary, the meet this week has been cancelled, so instead we will hold a time trial on Thursday after school (that day looks like it will be the warmest, fingers crossed).

We also will be practicing on Tuesday at 2:30 PM, even though there is no school for sophomores and seniors.

Register my athlete needs to be done ASAP, and uniforms will be distributed to those who have completed registration..

If you have any questions please let me know.
