11/20 update

Phoenix,

NXR recap

Our trip to NXR has concluded, and I want to thank everyone involved. First, athletes, you were very well behaved and great about being on time, generally quiet at the hotel, and supportive of your teammates. I was a bit worried about having 2 buses, with 79 kids, 89 people total on the trip, but there were pretty much no issues, and I can't thank you enough. Well done on the races, there were a lot of PRs, and, in spite of illness, some really great races. I know many of you felt like you didn't have your best day, some because of illness, others for perhaps unknown reasons. The best thing I can say right now, is to keep your head up and look forward to what is next. For some of you, that is life outside of high school, for others, it's next year. Regardless, you aren't defined by one race, even if it is your last xc race, but rather you are defined by how you approached it day after day. The journey is always more valuable than the destination.

Chaperones, thank you for taking time off to come help on the trip. Just by being there and being available, you were a huge help. The kids felt better about being there having many parents there willing to assist and support. In all sincerity, thank you for coming and sacrificing time and whatever else to come support.

Parents of athletes, thank you for allowing your kids to join us, everyone who attended made the trip better for others, each person added to the quality of the trip. For those that needed to, thank you for picking your kids up in the middle of the night, or waiting up many hours for their return. If your kids haven't told you, allow me to speak on their behalf: thank you for allowing them to go on the trip, and for paying their way (if applicable).

Speaking of paying, all the money that was left over after the buses and hotel rooms was used on the Jimmy John's. We had about $60 remaining, so we used that as a tip for JJs (after ordering 89 sandwiches, it seemed appropriate). In future years I'm hoping we can bring the cost down by completely filling the buses (we were about 15 kids short) and by getting the hotels earlier and securing a better rate. We could lower the cost by just filling the one bus, but I don't want to leave anyone out who has been on the team and training consistently. I've actually already spoken with a hotel (the one they went to last year) about rooms for next year, so I'll be ahead of the game. This year was somewhat difficult because I had never done a trip like this before. I just didn't know how much interest we'd have, so once I knew, there were basically no hotels that could accommodate 27 rooms that we needed. It was a long process with a lot of planning, and I learned a lot about how to make it better/smoother for next year.

If you have pictures or videos that you'd like to share with the group, I'm sure your teammates would be super appreciative. Here is the link to that album

What's next?

We are going to take two weeks off of running, except for rare exceptions (if you are one of those exceptions, please talk to me). Therefore, for today in class, and next week, we won't be running. Today in class we will be setting goals and reviewing this season, so I encourage you to come. I will scan you in at the room we are meeting at (which is tbd, but will be sent out through the group chat). Freshman should come directly to that classroom. Next week in class we will do something similar but we won't be running and we won't hold after school practices. There may be days where you might want to take an "absence" to go home and do homework or something, but today we will meet as a group to do the aforementioned activities, and then there will be time to do homework you may have missed during the trip.

In early December we will meet for indoor track. The exact date is still tbd, as are the details, so stay tuned for that.

Shirts

Some of you ordered black long sleeve shirts, and some ordered the teal shirt and never picked it up. Both are available so please come by to get them from me.

11/13 update

Phoenix,

We have finally reached NXR week! We will be leaving Thursday morning at 6 AM, so look alive people! I have included the intinerary at the bottom again.

At this point all NXR goers should all be in the group me, so if you aren't, please join. https://web.groupme.com/join_group/90394115/JRFk4nZn

You should also all have signed and sent the waiver in. Athletes will not be able to participate unless the Participant Release Form is signed and returned to NXR.Waivers@nike.com. The form must be signed, scanned and emailed to NXR.Waivers@nike.com prior to the start of your respective regional. If the athlete is a minor, we will need parent/guardian consent – the coach cannot sign on the parent/guardian’s behalf.

You can find the release form above or again here: https://www.athletic.net/Partner/Nike/2022NXRWaiver.pdf

Trip rules/guidelines:

This is a Cross Country trip, which means the purpose of the trip is to have the best race possible on a very fast course. The goal is to qualify teams for NXN, and while that is a difficult challenge, that is the goal. Therefore, everything we do will be to that end.

During the trip students are expected to be respectful of their teammates, the parent chaperones, the drivers, other hotel guests, other competitors, and the coaches. Students are expected to be in their assigned rooms at the designated times. The hotel has a room list, and students are not authorized to make room adjustments. While at the hotel, you should be conscientious of other hotel guests by following all hotel rules, especially those regarding quiet hours and facility usage. Disruptive and thoughtless behavior will not be tolerated.

At the same time, this trip is going to be a lot of fun. Travelling and being around teammates and friends with a common purpose for a few days is always a fun experience. Please make the experience enjoyable by being inclusive of all your teammates, and following the expectations above.

Because this school isn't done through the school, all absences will need to be parent excused. School approved trips are only allowed every few years, so this one is being done unofficially.

Parents of athletes going on the trip, if you would like me to have your phone number in case you need to be reached, please feel free to send it along. If you would feel more comfortable about the trip if you had my phone number, and I can then send you google voice number.

Practice Schedule

Monday - distance run (no organized practice)

Tuesday - workout during class

Wednesday - easy run (no organized practice)

Thursday - travel day, shake out run (those not racing should do a 20 minute tempo)

Friday - pre race

Saturday - race (those not racing should do a 30 minute stamina run)

Thanksgiving Day races - South Davis Rec Center

If you were considering signing up for a race on Thanksgiving, here are some promo codes for you from the race director:

Use code: TRACKATHLETE. That will save $10 on the 10k and TRACKATHLETE2 for the 5k. That one will save you $7! Registration link: https://www.southdavisraces.com/thanksgiving-day/

I think I'm going to sign up for the 10k (I'll be 5k'd out after running on the grass at NXR), but any family and friends who want to join, it's fun to run into each other (pun intended) on the morning of Thanksgiving.

Cross Country Class

Cross country class is going to look a bit different this coming week and the week after. One of the directives I was given by the administration was to make sure students were supervised during the class. (The school is already trying to deal with kids aimlessly wandering the halls during class periods, and I do not want to add to that). Several of you have been checking in to class, and then going off and doing something else in the school, or going home. I am responsible for making sure you guys are doing what you are supposed to, and I can't have kids unsupervised in the school, or leaving the school when you've been marked as present. If it was only 1 or 2 kids, I'd just speak to them individually, but on Friday alone I spoke with over 8 kids about it, leading me to realize this is fairly pervasive.

People tell me that at times they have difficulty reading my emotions (lol), so to those 8+ kids, if you thought I was mad at you, I apologize, I was more just pondering what I needed to do to make the expectations more clear so you aren't left wondering. Most of you had good "excuses" or reasons, but it still isn't something that can continue. I don't say all this to be mean, but rather it is because the class period is really beneficial, and I don't want it to be taken away because of kids not being where they ought to be (which I've seen happen at other schools).

Therefore, I am going to start taking roll out on the track during class, starting 15 minutes after the late bell rings (so generally at 1:20). If you are hurt, we can make a plan with the trainer for rehab or cross training. And, if you aren't there, you'll be marked absent (which goes without saying haha). Again, not mad, just thinking about what I can do better to be more clear so that we're all on the same page.

If you have any questions about that, please let me know.

11/6 Update

Phoenix,

I'm sending this out early to remind you about the Phoenix 5k on Saturday at 9 AM. As a reminder, if you'd like to order a long sleeve shirt, you can fill out this form, and I can invoice your account for payment ($15). I ordered extra shirts, and I'm hoping to have them by tomorrow morning. I will give them out on a first come first served basis.

Practice Schedule Next Week

Monday - during class, workout

Tuesday - no practice, easy run

Wednesday - ACT practice test; Practice will be at 1 PM on the track - prepare for rain

Thursday - No practice, easy run

Friday - Practice during class, distance run with a few strides thrown in at your discretion.

Saturday - longer run (not as long as a typical long run).

NXR

We are just about all set with the plans for the trip, there are only a few of you who have not paid, (not to sound like a broken record) but it is fairly urgent, as we need to pay for the buses, but we need to make sure the money is there, and we don't get left hanging on the back end.

We also have room for 2 more chaperones. We have rooms with 2 queen beds, all of which are now officially booked, but two rooms only have 1 chaperone in them (one mom in one, and one dad in the other). Therefore, if any of you parents are still interested in joining, feel free to let me know. We don't necessarily need more chaperones (with 6 parents and two coaches, we have 1 adult per 10 kids, which is a pretty solid ratio for high schoolers), but I won't complain to have more help. Furthermore, the rooms are there, so why not fill them if someone is interested.

I also want to get everyone going to NXR, athletes and chaperones into this NXR groupme. It will be our primary way of mass communication during the trip. I'd like to get everyone in it so I know you have a way of seeing announcements during the trip without me spamming the email or remind which contains many people not on the trip. Here is the link to join: https://groupme.com/join_group/90394115/JRFk4nZn

If you have any questions please let me know. Otherwise, hope to see you tomorrow for the Phoenix 5k. It will be mostly are team with some parents and others from the community running, but regardless will be a fun day.
