4/30 update

Phoenix,

Great job to all those who competed at the Davis Invitational. There were many terrific times/marks and it was a lot of fun spending the day watching you all push yourselves to the limit. Although it was super hot, there were a ton of PRs. In the distance events alone there were PRs on average of about 8 seconds. It was a lot of fun to see the hard work pay off.

We are down to the final 3 weeks of the season, if you can believe it.

This week

South End Jr. High Championships @ Farmington High, Monday 5/1.

We will be hosting the South End Jr High meet on Monday. The meet will begin with field events at 2 PM, running events at 3 PM. Those in the 8th period class are expected to come out right at 1:05 and begin setting up for the meet. We will meet together to talk briefly about what set up needs to be done, scan in, then begin setting up. When everything is concluded, including clean up, we will scan out and dismiss. I'm hoping all of that is done before 8, and optimistically before 7.

Here is the list of your assignments for the meet.

BYU Invitational

The BYU meet information can be found here. In order to attend this meet you need to have hit a qualifying mark at a state qualifying meet. That limits our entries pretty substantially, but we are still expecting to bring a strong team down. If you've hit one of the marks this weekend, and you'd like to go, please let me know ASAP so I can get you entered.

Please note that it is a 2-day meet, with laned events having trials on Friday then finals on Saturday.

There will not be a bus going down to this meet, so transportation will be on your own. If you attend the meet on Friday your absences will be school excused.

Team Dinner

We will be having a team dinner this Thursday, again at 6 PM at the school. We need another couple of volunteers to bring noodles, so if you can help please let me know or sign up on the sign up genius.

Next Week

Region Championships @ Davis High, Wednesday/Thursday

The region championships will be held on 5/10 and 11. A meet schedule will be posted when available.

Once again we are limited on entries. The priority of entries will basically be cascading down based on who has the best chance of scoring in the meet, and on down until we are out of entries. Thankfully, many of you will be able to compete there.

The final week

Sophomore Region, 5/15 @ Farmington High

Sophomore region is a chance for those who didn't compete at region (primarily sophomores) to have a chance to compete against their peers. I'm not 100% sure on the rules here, but it seems in the past they've allowed others besides just sophomores to compete. If you've qualified for state, you will absolutely not be competing at this meet. More info to come.

State Championships 5/18, 20 @ BYU

The state championships will be held on Thursday 5/18 and Saturday 5/20 at BYU. There will be a bus going to this meet, and everyone is encouraged to come. It is not mandatory to ride the bus to state, but it is available. The state meet will over partial extra credit for the track class to anyone who comes to support, and there will be one more opportunity for extra credit after state.

Looking forward to the final stretch! Keep after it, good things are ahead.

4/23 update

Phoenix,

I want to commend you all for great performances at Clearfield and Woods Cross. It's always a lot of fun seeing such hard work pay off at the meets. It's a bit sad to think that we are pretty much through the heart of the season. We are down to just a few meets remaining.

Thank you to the parents and Coach Lyman for making the team dinner such a success. It was a great time with great food. Thank you to all involved.

Junior High Meet on Monday

We have been asked to host a Junior High Meet on Monday 4/24, with a start time of 1 PM. I said last week, and discussed at more length at multiple practices, that this meet will be a make-up opportunity for anyone who has missed any meets. Working for the entirety of this meet will be worth one meet of make-up - but helping here won't clear you from helping at the next two, which will require all hands on deck, so to speak.

The expectation is that you come out by 12:25 (during lunch - bring a lunch), scan in at 12:25, and scan out at the end. I anticipate the meet ending before 5 PM.

Here are the jobs for the meet.

Alternate Meet for everyone

I've been working on getting another meet where everyone can attend, particularly those who don't make it into Davis or BYU. The problem is the facility is constantly being used - and we have to host 2 junior high meets when we otherwise could do a meet for us.

Between us and Layton we might be able to pull one off, and it might be very short notice. If we put one together last second obviously you wouldn't be penalized for missing, but I want to offer more opportunities for everyone.

At this point sharing this information is only going to raise questions, for which I have no answers. When/if I have more information (even if that means it won't happen), I will let you know. Honestly the odds aren't super high, I just want you to know that we are trying.

The Davis Invitational

Let me give a brief explanation of the Davis invite and who gets in.

The Davis invite is essentially two meets - the AM meet is called the open, the PM is called the invited /seeded section. The open has several heats of everything. The invited is one heat of everything. The way they set up the meet is anyone can register with times they got this year, and then they scratch everyone who is below a certain number. For example: say that 100 people sign up for the mile, but they only want 36 kids. They will take the fastest 36 kids and scratch the others. The fastest 12 or so of those kids will be in the invited section in the afternoon.) They also post a short list of alternates in case someone drops out last second, then they will fill in the gaps. There is no moving from the PM section to the AM section. If you are fast enough to make the PM session, they won't switch you.

Because of this method, we won't know who makes it into the meet until Wednesday or Thursday, at which point they will post the accepted entries, and I will share the link as well.

The schedule for the meet can be found at the link below, as well as a lengthy explanation of how the meet works. You can skim for the schedule if you'd like. They also posted an "estimated" cut off time for each event at the end of the document, but that is 100% a guess and will most likely be faster or slower in every event.

You can view the meet information here

That about covers it for the week. If you have any questions please let me know.

4/16 update

Phoenix,

First, I want to say thank you to each of you who were there to help out at the meets this week. A lot was asked of you between those two days and you handled it quite well. We ran a fantastic meet on Friday, and made it great for spectators and all who participated - the credit for that goes to each of you. It was a ton of work for all involved, and I for one slept much better now that it is over. Although it was a lot of work and stress for me, I really enjoyed it.

We have 3 more meets we are hosting, below you will see a make-up opportunity for those who have missed helping at a meet.

This Week

This week, and pretty much every week, we will be staying busy. We will be travelling to Clearfield on Wednesday with the JV team, and on Friday we will be going to Woods Cross with the varsity group. You are welcome to attend both meets (while competing in one), but it is not required. We will have buses to the meets.

Busing

On that note - the district policy on busing is that you must ride the bus to the meets when one is provided. You may go home only with your own parent/guardian. Please be sure to abide by these policies.

Clearfield/Wednesday

The bus for Clearfield will be leaving at 2 PM on Wednesday (so those of you in the class will not need to arrive until 1:50, at which point we will scan in while getting on the bus). Those of you not competing on Wednesday may do a workout here, or there, and will begin at the usual time (1:35 due to late start). You'll know if you are competing at Clearfield and not at WX either today or tomorrow, depending on your event.

Event Order

Woods Cross/Friday

We are limited on entries to this meet, so not everyone will be able to go. If you make it in to this meet we will let you know by tomorrow.

The bus will leave at 1 PM to WX. Those of you in the class who are not going to WX will be excused from 8th period, but will be expected to do a workout and not be wandering the halls. Ideally you'd join us to the meet and hang out with the team.

Practice Tuesday after ASPIRE Testing

We will be practicing on Tuesday at 2:40 on the track.

Team Dinner Thursday, 6 PM at the School

We will be holding our first team dinner on Thursday at the school. Thank you to the parents who volunteered to bring things! I believe there are still openings, so please sign up if you can! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70a094eacaa29a7f49-farmington1#/

Next Week/Missed meet make-up

On Monday 4/24 at 1 PM we will be hosting a Junior High meet with 4 schools. These meets are a lot of work, and we were allowed to begin early so that we aren't here all night. The following week we will be hosting another JH meet, this time south end, with like 8 schools, which will be even more work.

Many of you have been asking about make-up for having missed meets we have hosted. Because this meet on 4/24 is a bit smaller, this one is going to be your make up opportunity. Those who weren't able to help for the entirety of past meets will be the ones asked to help here. This meet won't be extra credit, just make up.

If you are wondering if you need any make up, check your canvas grade (I'm hoping to have that updated by tomorrow), and that will give you an idea.

The meet will begin at 1 PM, so once again you will be excused from 4th period (I don't make the schedule, I just do what the district/region (district in this case) tells me, so I am sorry about that), but actually we'll need to be out there during lunch as well to get set up in time. I will post a job list in the coming days.

While this is a make-up opportunity, the truth is we are going to need more help than what is available with the few kids who missed the previous meets, so if you can help for a time, at the beginning or end, your help will be greatly appreciated. If you haven't missed a meet, but would still be willing to help, please fill out this form with a request on where you'd like to help. If you can help, you will be excused from class. Keep in mind, helping here won't give you a pass to miss any of the future meets.

I don't expect this meet to go super late, so please help if you can, otherwise we are going to be spread pretty thin.

As always, we could use help from parents in managing these meets, ranging from concessions to results. (In fact, we could really use help with results. To do that I will have a computer in the box you use to view the finish line photo, assign a time to each athlete, and then save the file - it's super easy and pretty interesting, it just requires an extra person to do it.) If you'd like to help, please let me know.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to reach out.

4/9 update

Phoenix,

It's beginning to look a lot like Track season, and I for one couldn't be happier. I actually ran in shorts and a t shirt for the first time all year and it brought a tear to my eye, which, had it hit the ground, may have been the tipping point causing a few more basements to flood, so I was careful to snuff it out (but seriously, hope all your basements are weathering the groundwater and the runoff so far).

We have a busy week ahead - we are hosting two meets, and we'll need a lot of help to pull it all off. There is a lot of information, so please read it without skimming.

Wednesday - Layton, Weber @ Farmington - 3 PM

On Wednesday we will be hosting Layton and Weber in a small meet at home. I am making a list of jobs for everyone to help with. Those competing will be needed to help in their jobs around their events, but most of the heavy lifting, so to speak, will be done by those not competing on Wednesday. Everyone who doesn't qualify for the Phoenix Invitational on Friday will be competing on Wednesday. You can view the preliminary entries for Friday's invitational here. Those might change slightly so be aware. If you think your name was omitted in an event in error please let me know.

The Phoenix invite has minimum time standards to get into the meet and total entry numbers, so if you've run the time then you qualify to go, and then it's just a matter of making sure we are below the maximum number of entries. I've included those times at the end of this page. If you run a time on Wednesday that would qualify you for Friday, we might be able to get you in.

You can view Wednesday's Meet Schedule here.

Jobs/set up/excusal

You will be excused from 4th period, please come out at 1:20 to help set up.

Everybody is expected to help until final dismissal, at which point you will "scan out" to earn your points for the track class.

I anticipate being done with this meet around 6ish.

Friday - Phoenix Invitational - 2:30 PM

Friday is our biggest meet of the year, it will account for the majority of our fundraising, and it will give kids across the state an awesome meet to compete at, in an great facility, in an outstanding town, with spectacular vistas. As such, our goal is to make sure the meet runs as smoothly as possible, so each athlete and spectator has the best experience possible. Each person will have a job and everybody is expected to help until final dismissal, at which point you will "scan out" to earn your points for the track class. Plan on this meet going after dark, finishing under the stadium lights.

Concessions help

Instead of doing concessions as we did it the other day, we've asked for the Devil's Pit BBQ food truck to come to the meet. He offered to give us a percentage of the sales if we have someone there to help run the card reader/take orders. Parents, if any of you could help, even in short shifts, that would be a huge boost.

Again, if you'd like to volunteer in any capacity you can view things we need here. (On a side note, I have been fortunate to meet many of you parents, but if you haven't introduced yourself to me in person, and you're at a meet, please stop me to say hi. Sometimes I see people and I'm not sure if they are a parent for our team or another team so I am hesitant to say something. We really appreciate all your help and getting to know you.)

Jobs/set up/excusal

Again, we will scan out at the end once everything is cleaned up and put away.

You will be excused from all of 4th period to help set up, so please come out at 1:05. The meet begins at 2:30, so we will need to hop to it.

Fees

As a reminder, there are fees on your account which need to be paid or you can no longer compete. They are as follows: $20 transportation, $35 school, $35 district, and $5 drug testing. The uniform top is $55 and the bottom is $18 or $20. These uniforms will be yours to use over the years.

If you have any questions please let me know.
