Athletic Eligibility

There are several "hoops" one needs to jump through to make sure that you are eligible to participate in high school athletic.

Academic

Each athlete is required to be academically eligible in order to compete. The rules are fairly simple:

  • Each student must have a minimum of a 2.0 GPA from the previous term. The 2.0 must be earned at the end of the term - not days or weeks later.
  • Each student must have fewer than 2 failing (F) grades, meaning you may have 1 as long as your GPA is still above 2.0. (So, if you only have 2 classes, and you fail one of them, then if the other is an A- or lower, than you will be ineligible. Again, this rule applies by term end, not days or weeks later.
  • All Us (citizenship) must be made up and paid for before you can compete.
There is an appeals committee which can make a student eligible if any of the first two points aren't satisfied at the end of term due to extenuating circumstances (namely due to Summit). However, it is very rare for a student to "win" that appeal, therefore it is paramount that each student satisfies those points prior to the end of term.

For sports beginning in term 1 (XC), academic eligibility is determined from term 4 of the previous year. For sports beginning term 3 (track and field), eligibility is determined from term 2. In the case of track, where it ends in 4th term, eligibility is re-assessed at the end of term 3, which can make a student eligible or ineligible depending on the result of the 3rd term grades.

Register my Athlete

This is something that should be done as early as possible so you aren't rushing to complete it before the first meet.

Registration needs to be completed though the "register my athlete system". An athlete is not eligible to compete until it is completed. The following page has the instructions on how that needs to be completed: Registration instructions

The process includes signing up for the sport and completing a physical.

Physicals are valid during the school year in which they are received. The old rule allowed for one year from completion, but now it is only valid during the school year. Essentially they run form 6/1 through 5/31.

There is a specific document that the doctor needs to fill out, which can be found on the registration site. It needs to be printed and brought to the appointment. Then, the document must be uploaded (ALL PAGES) properly to the website before the Athletic Director can approve registration.

Athletic Fees

Each student-athlete must pay the fees associated with the sport before they are allowed to compete. There are fees set by the district and school to cover costs incurred by the sport. Those fees can be paid on your mydsd account.
