9/29 update

Phoenix,

We are finally on to our last week before the region championships. This is a long awaited day. Our boys appear to be in for a very close race with Davis for first place. In fact, Davis has beaten us all 3 times we've seen them this year, which means we have our work cut out for us. Fortunately for us, I feel deeply that we haven't had our best team race quite yet. Once we put that together, we'll be a tough team to beat.

The goal for our girls is different, we're looking to take steps forward as a team, really show how our fitness has improved, and get ready for divisionals the following week - where we hope to qualify for state. Two years ago our girls team won the region title with 3 sophomore girls in the race: Skye Siddoway, Alexis Bradshaw, and Ella Miller. Due to some wild change of events, two medical, one geographical, none of those 3 will be on the line next week. We now have another really young varsity team, with 2 freshman, and a few juniors and seniors. Given the setbacks we've had, if we are able to qualify for state as a team, that would be a great accomplishment for this group. So, our focus for the girls is about taking a step forward as a team, and being ready for divisionals.

Skye update

Skye continues to see improvement, and the plan is for her to have the hole in her skull repaired on Friday - they will put the piece of skull they removed weeks ago back in.

She has been up and walking around, doing PT, and even go out of the hospital for a little while and went to the aviary in SLC. All great news.

NXR

I am still working through the invitations for NXR. Again, we simply do not have enough space for everyone to attend, which I deeply regret. I also have to make these determinations this week, because the hotel is requesting a rooming list.

I have 3 lists at this point. Those who have received an invitation already, with a deadline to respond, those who are most likely going but have yet to receive an invite, and those who are on the waitlist as of today, and will be contacted with that information today.

You should check your email (the one you used to fill out the interest form) and see if you have heard from me. This is important, because a non-response will result in you being moved to the waitlist. I will reply to you when I receive your reply.

This week

We have a unique practice situation this week. On Wednesday morning we are going to have an OPTIONAL practice at Sugar House Park (the location of the state course). We will begin practice at 7 AM, and plan to leave there by 8:30 AM so you can have time to eat and clean up before 5th period. The reason we are going there is to get a feel for the state course, and we are not allowed to go to the course after 10/16, with two races before then, this may be our last shot at it.

If you choose to go to that practice, you will need to arrange transportation. Again, it's totally optional. If you come that morning you do not need to practice after school. Those who cannot attend in the morning will practice after school as usual. We will be doing 1k repeats.

9/22 update

Phoenix,

We don't have much of an update this week. The most important information is that our next official race is at Region on 10/9. We have a few weeks of training we can get in before that date, and it's going to be amazing.

NXR

As has been shared, we simply do not have enough space for everyone on our bus. If your attendance is below a certain number, it is likely that you won't be able to attend. That said, Davis has offered to accommodate a few of our athletes who may wish to travel with them. That is still tbd.

I have sent an email to those athletes who are on the bubble. I consider that a "waitlist." In the next few days I'm going to send out a list of athletes who have been tentatively approved to attend. That list will also include the cost of the trip, and the way to venmo the parent who will be spearheading the financial side of the trip. Those athletes who do not send payment in before the deadline (tbd, but likely the end of this week or the beginning of next week), will be moved to the waitlist, and someone from the waitlist will be bumped up. I cannot delay in receiving payment, as we need to send payments to the busing company and the hotel very soon, and I'm not going to have the parent float that money. We also have to have a rooming list sent to the hotel early next week. Therefore, we are in crunch time. If you have any questions, please let me know.

A delay in payment will be considered a lack of interest in attending the trip, hence we will move someone into that spot who is willing to make the payment. However, in extenuating circumstance, and with prompt communication, we may be able to make short term exceptions.

9/15 update

Phoenix,

This week we will be racing at the Davis District Championships at Layton City park on Wednesday, with the first race at 3:30.

Girls JV 3:30

Boys JV 4:00

Girls Varsity 4:30

Boys Varsity 5:00

We had a very good day at Border Wars, but we had a lot of performances that didn't go the way we had planned or hoped. We are looking for this race to be a bounce back race for those, and a step forward/breakout race for those who felt they left something on the table on Saturday. Honestly, I cannot wait!

We will not have a bus on Wednesday, so you will be excused at 2 PM so you can get out of the parking lot. I'd like to have everyone meet there at the park by 2:30 so we can look at the course together as a team.

9/8 update

Phoenix,

I apologize for a late update this week. I have a long list of things to do and little time to do it, so this one will be short and sweet.

For a recap of our races on Friday, go check out our instagram. So many great performances. Looking forward to what is next.

Skye Update

Skye is by no means out of the woods. She remains in the ICU and the nurses, doctors, and her family are working round the clock to help her in her healing. She has made steps to improve, but not everything has been linear, meaning there have been a few hiccups, but she is moving away from worst of it.

The way it is described is "she is not in recovery yet" which means that she is still in the thick of it. What that means for us is that we need to continue offering our support on her behalf and that of her family.

She has been moving a lot more, and some of those movements are really aggressive, you can imagine her confusion and eagerness to move her typically very active body. The nurses describe her as "very strong" when they talk about how she moves, and she is giving them a run for their money when they try to keep her from leaping out of bed - which wouldn't be great for her healing.

She regained consciousness for a little while there, but she was very confused, as is normal when coming off of sedation and with a severe brain injury, but she was talking a bit, which is remarkable and unusual. The nurses were shocked that she spoke so well. Unfortunately, the pressure in her brain raised too high during this time when she was conscious, so they had to put her back under to restabilize her.

That's where we are right now. Her mom describes her approach in an admirable way, and it is something that we all should do as well. The bottom line is that we will love Skye no matter how this journey proceeds, and we will always be proud of her. Rather than dwelling on the what-ifs, we should focus on how we feel about her, and how we will always feel. And in the meantime, let us hope, pray and, where we can, work for the best for her and her family.

This week

This week we have a meet on Saturday at Border Wars, which is an awesome meet. It's in Taylorsville, and we have a slight logistical problem: we won't be taking a bus. There were too many issues with bussing to this meet, so we decided not to do it. If that changes your status for being able to race, let me know ASAP. If you have space in your vehicle to take teammates/kids to the race, please make that known. I'm not allowed to facilitate rides, so talk to your teammates about it.

You can see the location and schedule on our schedule page.

Please look at the entries and make sure you are entered if you ought to be, or not entered if you shouldn't be.
