7/27 update

Phoenix,

We are officially in to August this week! This summer has flown by. Make sure you dominate the final few days of July, and enter August at full speed.

Our first race is coming up in just over 2 weeks. We will begin practicing Monday-Friday on 8/11, with Saturday long runs continuing as they are.

Make sure you have completed register my athlete - check the dropdown menu at the top of this website for more information on that.

If you aren't in the first period XC class already, it's not mandatory, but it is super helpful to be able to run easy in the morning before another afternoon session. It makes it easier on the body to hit the proper volume, and for those not needing the double run, you can cross train in the morning, which is hugely beneficial as well. We end each class period with breakfast provided by parents of the team.

This week

You'll notice we are only meeting once this week. You should get with your partners, and do group runs each day. Make sure you are running even though it is not an organized practice. Next week we will begin workouts in earnest!

7/20 Update

Phoenix,

I hope you all had a great middle of July week. We are seriously coming down to it, so again, I implore you, to dominate this month.

We're super hyped with the progress you've been making, we have had a lot of consistency from many of you, and we trust that you are making an effort to stay consistent even while out of town. Keep dominating July, and you'll be happy about your progress at our first race is less than one month.  This week is one of our last standard weeks, as August is right around the corner, so let's dominate it.

I know some of you have signed up for the Deseret News races (and if you want to be part of a team I need to know the 3-4 names of your team, so send them to me toute de suite). We won't be tapering for that race, so just power through it with your mileage. We're looking to October to be performing our best, not July 24th, so keep that in mind.

Speaking of increasing our mileage, this Wednesday at Vita, for anyone who has been running with us for more than 1 year, we're all doing "full vita" (about 7 miles - any first year runners can do the full thing or not, depending on where your training is). I think Shylie is getting tired of running back with me and the other coaches so we're making it a full group, full vita.

7/13 update

Phoenix,

The Festival Days races were such a vibe! (as kids have been known to say) It was a blast to get out and race together and enjoy the GOATed pre race breakfast!

I knew the athletes would clean up on the awards, taking 11 of the 12 spots for the 12-15 and 16-19 age groups! It was a lot of fun seeing so many parents join us this year, and it was great to hear their names being announced as age group placers as well! It just warms my heart to see this race as a family affair.

I ran this race for the first time in 2021 and I knew one person there - the friend that came with me. Yesterday I felt like I knew everyone, because we had such a great turnout from our team, alumni, and parents! Here's hoping we can relive that tradition each year as long as each of you are able.

Whether you surprised yourself with your time, like Miles who ran like 6 minutes faster than he estimated, or Lilla, who ran like two minutes faster, or you surprised others, like Jon (who I want to say for the record didn't surprise me that much, because he's been dominating training for quite a while now), or if you were somewhat disappointed with your time, feeling like you could have done better, or didn't run to your potential, it won't matter much in the long run.

The race was just to see where you are as of Saturday, and because it was just one race, it will be taken with a grain of salt, because anyone can have a bad day, (although you can't just have "a good day", one can't race better than their fitness). You know where you are, more or less, and now we're hoping to see great improvements before our first XC race next month. In the meantime, we have to DOMINATE the rest of July!

Do what you have to do so you can dominate each day. I posted a meme on the Instagram story (and shortly after I literally saw a meme of a coach sharing memes with their team, smh), that said something to the effect of, "Cheating by training harder than my competition so I can beat them". I thought it was amusing and true. As a team, we can out train our competition - although that's not my favorite focus. Rather, we need to out train our past selves, and level our team up, and train so hard and well that on race day no one could beat us but ourselves. Dominate each day, so you can dominate the race.
